Dear Colleagues,
An international conference on Cancer Prevention in the Arab World: Applied Strategies will be held in Kuwait on 31 March – 1 April 2012. This is a big event which will be attended by international and regional speakers from various cancer organizations around the world. Participation is open to gulf and arab oncologists in particular and we also welcome medical practitioners who are involved in cancer awareness programmes, cancer management and awareness activities. The conference has four main objectives: 1) to provide an international venue to discuss and educate the public at large regarding cancer awareness with special attention to early detection and screening;2) to host a scientific forum for the presentation of current and new strategies in cancer awareness activities underscoring the effectiveness or failure of such strategies both at local, regional and international levels; 3) to highlight the experiences of the GCC and other arab countries in cancer awareness programmes; and 4) to focus on the roles of government and non-government organizations (NGOs) towards their partnership in promoting cancer awareness in the society.
This major conference is organized by Cancer Aware Nation (CAN) and the Kuwait Society for Oncology (KSO) in cooperation with the Arab Medical Association Against Cancer (AMAAC) and the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control (GFFCC). We welcome the submission of abstracts and manuscripts for this conference and we will soon provide you with the organizers’ contact information. In the meantime, please visit the CAN or GFFCC website for further announcements on this conference.
A meeting was held in Cairo last 22 October 2011 by the Board of Directors of the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control to reestablish the Gulf Society of Oncology as a scientific union for oncologists in the gulf region and Yemen. A supervisory committee was formed to implement the goals of the society headed by Dr. Ibrahim Alsheneber of Saudi Arabia as General Coordinator. The committee was tasked to start the GCC group for research and begin the multi-centric study in the gulf area. We encourage scientists and oncologists in the gulf and Yemen to contribute and be actively involved in the clinical research activities undertaken by the group.
Our cover design in this issue is symbolic of the 5th year of publication of the journal (2007-2012). We are very glad and thankful to all our readers, contributors, editors, reviewers, advertisers and patrons who share a part of our success. Thank you!
Best regards,
Dr. Khaled Al Saleh
