Dear Colleagues,
The importance of establishing a reference centre for cancer research was the highlight of the recommendations presented by cancer researchers and entities in the GCC during the closing ceremony of the 5th Combined Gulf Cancer Conference, held at the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre, Sharjah, on November 21-23, 2022. The conference was very productive, and cancer experts shared their recommendations on the importance of communication, fostering a culture of medical consultation, and harnessing modern technology, particularly in early detection and treatment, and its critical role and great economic viability, cost-effectiveness, and resource optimization. Health professionals also advocated the need to support scientific research to further develop cancer care with a focus on palliative care to offer inclusive treatment services to patients. This conference also addressed key issues that will stimulate cancer prevention and control organizations in the GCC countries to strategize on developing activities and programs, focus on enhancing the effectiveness of cancer prevention awareness programs, and prioritize educating the community on the importance of early detection in combating cancer and continuing to provide excellence in healthcare.

I’m pleased to announce we are now celebrating the 8th year of the annual Gulf Awareness Week: Gulf Week for Cancer Awareness from the 1st to the 7th of February 2023. As you know it was first started in February 2016 as partnership between the Gulf Centre for Cancer Control and Prevention (GCCCP) under the Executive Office of the Health Ministers’ Council for the GCC and the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control (GFFCC) representing 19 cancer associations in the region. The campaign slogan “40x40” stands for what has been scientifically proven that cancer can be prevented by 40% through avoiding different risk factors which may happen by awareness campaign and 40% increasing in cure rate by early detection. Therefore, the partnership between government agencies, non-governmental organizations and charitable organizations will be a key element in this campaign. We are inviting everyone to join and support the programs and activities of our cancer associations in their respective localities.
Best regards,
Dr. Khaled Ahmed Al Saleh
