Dr. AlSaleh : Controversy regarding the administration of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine due to side effects

Secretary General of the Gulf Union for Cancer Control Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh stated that there are half a million new cases of human papillomavirus (HPV) every year, and 79% of them occur in poor countries. This came during the workshop held by the federation under the slogan “Needs of the National Vaccination in Kuwait for Human Papilloma Virus between the recommendations of the World Health Organization, community changes and the pressure of pharmaceutical companies,” noting that the workshop discussed cervical cancer, which is considered one of the most important causes of death among women in the world.

Dr. Al-Saleh said: Studies have shown that HPV vaccination prevents 90% of virus infection, 70% of uterine cancer, 80% of anal canal cancer, and 60% of vaginal cancer, pointing out that the World Health Organization recommended the introduction of the human papillomavirus vaccine as part of the Routine vaccinations in all countries where the infection rate is more than 4 per 100,000 population. He added: «The incidence rates in India are 99 cases per 100,000 people, and in Chile and Colombia it is 77 cases per 100,000 people. As for the vaccination that is taken after infection, its role is very limited. Dr. Al-Saleh indicated that studies indicated that this vaccine is not free from complications and showed that among the 23 million users of the vaccine, 12.5% had side effects, including 6% who had serious symptoms that required hospitalization, and the controversy is still going on about giving the vaccine.
